When we think of a feeling of luxury, we think about an overall experience within a certain environment, rather than a certain item or thing. With this in mind, when designing a luxury living room you should consider how the space makes you feel by implementing different colours, textures and fabrics, and perhaps replacing items that have suffered a lot of wear and tear over the years. In other words, your luxury living room doesn’t have to be decked out with expensive, grand furniture and an oversized TV to make it feel opulent, it’s often a much simpler (and more affordable) pursuit than that.

We spend a large proportion of our time in the living room, relaxing after a long day’s work, settling down for family movie night or entertaining guests, so it’s important to get it right. In fact, the living room is usually one of the first spaces in a house that guests will see. With that said, there’s no wonder that many homeowners strive to create a sense of chic in their living space, which can certainly be achieved without necessarily having to break the bank.

Start in the Centre

Balance and symmetry is an important element of luxury interior design, so it’s always a good idea to start with a central focal point and work around it. This could be an architectural feature, like a fireplace, or a piece of furniture or art. Essentially, you don’t want to throw items in without a planned layout, because the space will feel too fussy and cluttered. Creating balance in the space also refers to how you use your colours, not just where you place your furniture, as you want the space to feel cohesive.

Invest in a Statement Sofa

A statement sofa will be integral to your living room’s overall design and will really help you achieve that luxurious look and feel. It could be the stylish central focal point mentioned above and will allow you to infuse your personality into the space. If your living room is fairly spacious, it would be wise to choose a bigger sofa that doesn’t get lost in the space and look completely out of place.

The colour and fabric are also hugely important when selecting a sofa, so don’t shy away from a bold design. However, sometimes less is more when it comes to interior design, so it really depends on your personal preference and the size of the space. Having a stylish sofa also doesn’t mean you have to compromise on comfort. If your sofa is primarily for relaxation purposes, opt for a wide style with a high back and loose cushions.

At Delcor, our furniture pieces are completely bespoke based on your requirements, which will allow you to invest in something unique rather than falling in with a crowd of mass-produced items. What’s more, we are happy to re-assemble your new sofa on site which is ideal if you have any awkward spaces or tricky access points.

Consider Contrasting Colours & Textures

Having different textures and styles within one space is a great way to achieve the luxurious design you’re hoping for, as it adds interest and contrast. If you’re buying an armchair, for instance, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same colour or style as your sofa, especially if you want it to be another focal point in the space.

One of the easiest ways to introduce different textures is with your soft furnishings, such as sofa cushions, curtains and surface finishes. If your furniture is quite blocky and square, maybe consider adding some curvy items like mirrors, lamps and other accessories to make the room look more expensive.

Install Luxury Lighting

Lighting is a powerful tool when it comes to creating a particular aesthetic and atmosphere. Replacing old, outdated fixtures will be a quick fix for creating a more luxurious and modern vibe. What’s more, dimmer lighting is great for creating a sense of opulence, so either swap out your overhead lights for smaller lamps dotted around the room, or invest in a dimmer switch so that you can reduce the brightness when you want to relax.

At Delcor, we’re under no illusions that decorating a magazine-worthy, luxurious living room is an easy feat, but there are lots of things you can do to achieve that luxe look without blowing through your budget. Plus, you don’t have to live in a mansion to ooze splendour – a luxury living room can be achieved in a smaller space too.
